Not just for stockings, not just the Cabaret, not only seduction focusing on the legs. With or without back seam, woven in thick thread, creating a loose texture that recalls a fish net, it’s the boldest and sexiest stocking there is. Speaking of its punk version, we shall move right away toVivienne Westwood, that headed that culture: nets and slits and leather were on sale at Let it rock in London, very popular with the young already in the 70s. Lou Reed and David Bowie and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, singer and father of actress Liv, have all given net their personal interpretation.
Then came the sexy and super-daring Eighties, a decade that used net extensively. Starting with cinema, we shall focus on a young Madonna, starring in Desperately Seeking Susan: netted clothes and gothic jewelry are her distinctive feature, the first of many looks for the chameleonic rockstar. In the same years, the sophisticated traits of Isabella Rossellini interpreted the net and the aesthetics by Dolce & Gabbana: Sicily conquering the planet, with the black tops that are decidedly a part of it .
Jean Paul Gaultier placed netted inserts in his evening dresses, treating the texture as a precious fabric, while Maison Martin Margiela used it as a basic element, we are referring to the celebrated tank tops, that is to say, a must-have basic piece in some avant-garde wardrobes. By Margiela or not, the minimal and dark maxi-tank tops are interesting objects that the wearer will give a chic twist, by layering them: but never with a bra.
Back to legs, we well talk about the deconstructed punk (and very well reconstructed) by Comme des Garçons, in particular in the cotton thread, very loosely woven fishnet stockings, with legs quite exposed.
Closely or loosely woven, the net is the texture for this 2012 season. Sensuous see-through effects or, on the contrary, proposed in strong and rigid structures-armors, the net is a regular on the catwalk: the material was very popular during the 80s and the decade itself has made a strong comeback. Together with dresses and tops, jackets and skirts that capture the eye with this chic-with-a-rock-twist style. Gareth Pugh for summer has proposed shoes that recall in some ways the trend, within a black and white collection.
A ladylike use of net for Jil Sander.
Netted tops and skirts in glamorous pastel colors for Ermanno Scervino. White net takes center stage at Chloé, while also accessories draw on the trend: the singular Mary Jane shoes byDolce&Gabbana. We cannot but mention, of course, the proposals by low-cost fashion brands: the crocheted dress recreating a classic net texture by H&M, the white openwork top by Zara, or the short-sleeved openwork sweater by Mango.
